This section provides links and information about a range of resources that primary schools will find useful. It will be regularly updated so visit often to find out about new as well as ‘tried and tested’ resources.

Work addressing homophobia can start in early years through story telling and circle time activities exploring different families, including lesbian and gay characters, challenging gender stereotypes and celebrating differences. Included on this site is information about a wide range of story books focusing on these themes.

‘We are all different and we are all special’ is a wonderful theme used by an East London primary school to celebrate diversity, include discussions about lesbian and gay people and the importance of challenging homophobia. Staff in the school used many of the resources included in this website, but also used current events to raise the issue of homophobia and talk about the lives and experiences of lesbian and gay people. For example the staff used the opportunity of Barack Obama’s speech on winning the election as President of the USA on the 4th November 2009 to explore how we ‘young and old, rich and poor, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled’ can create a better future. The children watched an extract of his speech and then discussed the challenges they might face in their lives and how they can overcome these.
